Why do they call CD singles with more than two songs “Maxi”?

I always wondered, this may be a stupid question but I don’t know =[ anyone have a simple explanation?

Probably becasue there are a different amout of mixes (club mix, 12″ remix, etc.)

To distinguish them from the CD Singles that only have one song. They shorten the word ‘Maximum’ and use the term Maxi to describe CD Singles that have multiple versions of the same song (various remixes)
